5 Types of Knee Pain You Shouldn’t Ignore

5 Types of Knee Pain You Shouldn’t Ignore

When it comes to the knees, minor discomfort can sometimes turn into a major pain.

Significant forces act on the knee joint every day, as it’s responsible for connecting the two longest mechanical levers in our bodies: the thigh and lower leg. So it’s no surprise that knee problems represent a third of all doctor’s visits for muscle and bone pain.

In many cases, ignoring knee pain has catastrophic consequences. Damaged knees can create additional problems in the body and often require surgery.

So how do you know when knee pain indicates a serious problem? The following situations may require a medical consultation—the sooner the better.

You Feel Something Moving in Your Knee

knee pain you shouldn't ignoreSometimes, small pieces of cartilage or bone become loose and float around in the joint. These are called loose bodies, and the most commonly affected joint is the knee.

If you have loose bodies in your knee, you may experience:

  • Locking of your knee
  • A feeling of something moving around in your knee
  • Knee pain

Loose bodies need to be removed to prevent damage to your cartilage. Typically, this can be done by arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure.

You Hear a Snap, Crackle, or Pop

Cracking and popping noises in the knee joint are common and usually don’t indicate a serious problem. However, if you are also experiencing pain or swelling, it could be a sign of something more serious.

Possible conditions include:

  • Meniscus tear
  • Cartilage injury
  • Dislocated kneecap
  • Osteoarthritis

See a doctor if you’re hearing noises and feeling pain. If left untreated, some of these conditions can lead to increasing pain and permanent damage to the joint.

You Have Pain When Climbing Stairs

pain climbing up stairsAccording to research out of the University of Leeds, pain when walking up steps was the first weight-bearing task in which people with osteoarthritis noticed pain.

In other words, the pain that’s telling you to take the elevator may actually be an early warning sign of a degenerative joint disease.

As the disease progressed, participants in the study noted pain during walking, standing, lying, or sitting.

If you have osteoarthritis, your doctor can work with you to create a treatment plan that relieves pain and helps protect your joints from further damage.

You Kneel a Lot

Prepatellar bursitis is a knee condition that occurs when the bursa—a sac of fluid around the knee—becomes irritated.

Commonly known as “housemaid’s knee” or “preacher’s knee,” it’s often caused by repetitive kneeling. But housekeepers and clergy aren’t the only ones at risk. Roofers, plumbers, coal miners, floor installers, and gardeners are also vulnerable.

See a doctor if you kneel frequently and have:

  • Knee pain
  • Skin over the knee that’s warm, red, and swollen
  • Knee joint stiffness

You Had a (Minor) Sports Injury

sports injuryYou may shrug off knee pain from a sports injury, especially if you’ve been active your whole life and have recovered quickly in the past. After all, discomfort in healthy knees comes and goes.

But here’s the thing: As you age, your joints become more vulnerable to damage. The gradual onset of osteoarthritis usually begins after the age of 40, though people in their 20s and 30s can get it too.

Ligament tears (ACL, MCL, LCL) and meniscus tears are common in younger, active people, from competitive athletes to weekend warriors.

If you have continued pain for a supposedly minor injury, see your doctor.

Iam lately having very bad knee pain at nights especially, and when I keep my palm on my knee I can feel something moving & creating little noises; I cant sleep at night due to alot of knee pain sometimes. why is this happening? I personally think it is because of over weight my weight is 55 but my height is 5″2, is overweight the reason?

My pain started with a farming accident. I was hit in the knee, bending it backwards. I heard and felt a small pop. The knee was very swollen, I iced it and worn a knee brace. Hasn’t bothered me in a 1 1/2 years. Now I have a lump that is painful on the inside of my leg just below my knee. There is also pain behind my knee. Stepping up and setting with knee bend causes the most pain. Any ideas.

OH my goodness, so ever since i was eight years old, I have been experiencing this very weird…”Spasms(i guess) in my knees. This usually happens when I’m sitting on my knees and all of a sudden I feel like my knees ” twist”. Like as if they were being condensed or like they are cramping, if that helps explain it. I have no idea what this means. My mother told me it was just because I”m growing, but it just does not sound right. It ALWAYS feels extremely painful every time and I usually have to drop down to the floor and lay down and its pretty bad. Nobody else in my family had suffered from this. What in the world could it be and how in the world can I prevent it?????

I had a minor knee injury in Basketball last year. I thought it was nothing and would heal over time. The way I got injured didn’t even seem like much till the following day. It hurt to run, squat, climb up or down stairs. Walking it was fine, however sometimes it would lock or buckle. I went to physical therapy for a little while, but it didn’t do much. It’s been over a year and it seems my pain is growing. If I work my knee too hard, the following morning, I find it extremely difficult to get out of bed without it hurting to move let alone trying to move it as I sleep. I carry about 15lbs-30lbs on my back every day. I often have thoughts of my friends coming up behind me to surprise me, which will end up causing my knee to buckle and break inward. I’m not sure what to do.

My right knee has a pain in the inner side with a burning sensation. If I sit with my knee bent for a time, it’s painful to straighten the knee, but there is no issue in bending the knee. I suspect a cartilage tear, but could it be a ligament or tendon injury or bursitis?

i was playing with my cousin when he put his knee on top of my knee and from then i have noticed this ball on my right leg, around my knee and it hurts to put pressure on it. i can move it around but i cannot bend my leg completely without it being painful. i have not been able to walk perfectly but its been 2 days and i am starting to walk better. is this something i should just forget about or should i go to the hospital??? if you could tell from my descriptions what is wrong with me please tell me, i am 17 years old and kinda scared about this accident
